sake
Japanese sake began in this place, Tango.
It is said that Japanese sake, commonly known as “seishu,” originated in Nara City or Itami City, but there are records that show that before seishu was born, sake, the origin of Japanese sake, began in Tango, the Kyoto of the Sea.The Tango region is blessed with pure water and a natural environment perfect for growing rice, the main ingredient in sake.

zen
The origin of “wa” (harmony), which represents Japanese culture and spirituality.
Tango is the hidden setting of Japan’s myth of the creation of the nation, a sacred land that appears in numerous myths and legends, where the connection between the gods and the local people is very strong.
Although Tango was a powerful nation with advanced culture and sophisticated technology introduced from the continent, it did not fight with the Yamato government, but instead contributed to the founding of Japan by remaining in harmony with it.

silk
A major producer of silk fabrics in Japan.
This region has a history spanning over 300 years, originating during the Edo period and becoming a major production center for the majority of kimono fabrics in Japan at its peak.
“Tango Chirimen” is a general term for silk fabrics woven using a piece-dyeing technique that creates an uneven surface. Characterized by its wrinkle-resistant properties, suppleness, and deep, beautiful colors, it has supported Japan’s traditional clothing culture as a kimono fabric.

1 Day (50km) / Kyoto to Miyama
I will pick you up at your hotel and then help you choose the right size electric bike for your height at my store.
This is the highest and most challenging route of the 5th day. We will cycle over the mountains surrounding Kyoto City and head towards Miyama Town, a tranquil and scenic rural area that once thrived on forestry.

Isobe

2 Day (60km) / Miyama to Ayabe
Ayabe is a town that has long prospered through sericulture, the source of silk thread. The finest kimono fabrics are made from the highest quality silk thread produced in Ayabe. The area is now known as a place that promotes farm-inn accommodation.

Imaya

3 Day (45km) / Ayabe to Miyazu
From the mountain villages to the seaside town, Miyazu City is home to the famous Amanohashidate, a popular tourist spot in Japan, and is also home to the mythical legend of the birth of Japan. This is an area where you can feel the presence of gods and Buddhas close at hand.

Amanohashidate

4 Day (42km) / Miyazu to Kyotango
Known as a fishing town and an agricultural town, this is the area where you can feel the most close to the lives of the local people. The area of Taiza in particular has a strong contrast and is one of my favorite places.

Kyotango Taiza

5 Day (40km) / Kyotango to Ine → Nearest station or Kyoto city (Car transfers)
On the final day of the cycling tour, you will travel along a varied coastline where you can experience the overwhelming beauty of nature. One of the highlights of the tour is the natural hot springs you can soak in along the way.

Scenes from the good old days of Japan

Legend has it that about 2,200 years ago, the First Emperor of China wanted an elixir of immortality, so he sent a man named Jofuku to sail to the Tango Peninsula to search for the elixir.
From the 4th to 5th centuries, rice cultivation, farming, iron processing, weaving, and sake brewing developed, and a large city known as the Tango Kingdom was born.
With such a historical background, the Tango Peninsula still retains its good old industry, agriculture, culture, and customs.

Dynamic coastline cycling

Cycling from Kyoto City to the Tango Peninsula is truly dynamic. The scenery changes rapidly, from mountains, clear streams, lakes, dams, rural villages, and fishing villages, leaving cyclists amazed. The terrain is also rugged, with many courses offering constant excitement, making this a cycling tour.
Once you enter the Tango Peninsula, a magnificent view of the coastline spreads out before your eyes. There are beautiful, quiet beaches and cliff-like coastlines, making for a very varied terrain. The water quality is excellent and highly transparent, and on sunny days you can see the deep blue sea, known as “Tango Blue,” that is unique to the Tango Peninsula.

Interacting with locals

As it is a hidden gem in Kyoto, we will be cycling through sparsely populated towns, but the local people are shy but kind and friendly. On this tour, we hope to create as many opportunities as possible to interact with the locals.

living
Experience local life

While cycling through this town, where rice farms, pesticide-free vegetable farms, and fishing industries thrive, you can see the locals at work and living their lives. You can experience the hidden countryside of Kyoto that you can’t see in Kyoto city.

Seafood
Super fresh seafood

While you might imagine Kyoto city as the birthplace of washoku, a cuisine recognized as a World Heritage Site, its origins lie in Kyoto by the sea. Rice, condiments such as sake, soy sauce, and vinegar, as well as vegetables and fish, were all brought from Kyoto by the sea through trade, making it the true origin of washoku.
