Kyoto → Lake Biwa → Ohara → Kyoto
(1 day) Kyoto to Lake Biwa cycling route
Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, is located in Shiga Prefecture. Lake Biwa isn't the only attraction on this route. It's a varied cycling route that also includes the Yamashina Canal leading to Lake Biwa and the Ozeki Pass.

Quiet walking path along the Yamashina Canal
The Lake Biwa Canal was constructed in the Meiji era with the aim of revitalizing Kyoto, and has played a wide range of roles, including providing water for shipping, power generation, waterworks, and tourism. The canal is a promenade and bicycles can also be used.

Ozeki-Goe Pass
I was thrilled when a friend told me about this mountain pass. Until now, when cycling from Kyoto City to Lake Biwa, I had to take the dangerous national highway with heavy traffic. Ozekigoe Pass is a safe mountain pass with beautiful scenery and a gentle slope.

Hamaotsu, the gateway to Lake Biwa
Hamaotsu on Lake Biwa is not far from Kyoto City. Sightseeing boats such as the Michigan and Bianca depart here. There is a bicycle path along the lakeshore, making it a popular spot for cyclists.

Road conditions around Lake Biwa
While Japan is not yet fully developed in terms of bicycle paths, Shiga Prefecture, home to Lake Biwa, is relatively well-developed. There are various roads along Lake Biwa, including the main National Route 161, under the elevated Japan Railway tracks, and under the elevated expressway.

Biwako Ohashi Bridge, a symbol of Lake Biwa
Biwako Ohashi Bridge connects the east and west sides of Lake Biwa. The west side is the Katata area, and the east side is the Moriyama area. This bridge is also open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Roadside Station Biwako Ohashi Rice Plaza
This roadside station is recommended for a break or lunch. There are also fruit and vegetable shops and a souvenir corner, so it's a very enjoyable place to visit. In the summer, it's especially fun to take a break and eat and drink in the air-conditioned restaurant.

Tochu-Goe Pass
Please drive carefully as there is a lot of traffic and large trucks on this road. There are shortcuts before and after this pass, so it is safe and the scenery is beautiful.

Beautiful Satoyama "Ohara, Kyoto"
I recommend Ohara, where Kyoto's beautiful countryside remains. It is known as a producer of high-quality Kyoto brand vegetables, and is also famous for producing pickles, an essential part of Japanese cuisine. The rivers and water are clean, and cycling there is refreshing.
